Fig Tree FAQs
Below are some of the most commonly asked questions we get from prospective or recent customers regarding our fig trees. Whether you're planting one fig tree or an entire orchard, our #1 goal is for you to be successful with the trees you order from us. We're very grateful for every single customer and want everyone to succeed so they can enjoy their own delicious figs!
Do You Allow Local Pickup?
We do not sell any fig trees on site at the farm. Over the years we have streamlined our fulfillment process to make it as efficient as possible. As a result, it is easier for us to ship a tree than it is to have it picked up at the farm. Even if you live in the same county or nearby, place your order online and we'll ship it to you in a timely manner after your order is placed.
When Do You Ship Fig Trees?
We start shipping fig trees in April as temperatures allow. We will not ship a fig tree unless we firmly believe we can get it to you without it experiencing freezing temperatures along the way. We usually ship fig trees on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. During the warmer months of the year, we may delay shipments 1-2 weeks to avoid shipping trees in extremely hot conditions. How Big Are the Fig Trees?
All our fig trees are shipped in a 4x9" tree pot. Your tree will range from 1' to 3' tall, because some varieties grow much faster than others. We try to only ship trees that have an established root system and some "hardened-off" growth. Leaves may be trimmed so that the tree fits better inside the box. Trimming the leaves also prevents excess stress on the tree during transit.
Can I Plant It Right Away?
We do not recommend planting your new fig trees as soon as you receive it. The fig tree will need a week or two to recover from any stress during transit. After unboxing the tree, water it daily and allow time for the leaves to become vibrant again. If there appear to be any issues with the tree several weeks after receiving it, feel free to email us at support@lazydogfarm.com and we'll be glad to help.
When Can I Plant It?
You can "up-pot" the fig tree any time you'd like. Many northern growers prefer to grow fig trees permanently in large pots. If planting in the ground, spring or early summer is the best time to plant. Growers in the Deep South can also plant in the fall, but be sure to plant early enough so that roots can establish before the trees go dormant in the winter.
What If My Fig Tree Dies?
We have a 60-day refund/replacement policy on all fig trees. The 60 days starts when you receive the fig tree, not when you placed the order. If your fig tree looks like it has died at any time within those 60 days, send us an email to support@lazydogfarm.com with a photo of the tree in its current state. We'll respond promptly and work with you to get a replacement tree on the way.
Can I Grow Figs Up North?
Fig trees are generally cold hardy and safe down to 15-20°F. Below that threshold, some trees may die back to the ground and grow back the following year. Older trees can tolerate colder temperatures better than younger trees. Most northern growers will grow fig trees in large pots so that they can easily bring them indoors or to a protected area during the winter.
