The LSU Honey White Fig is another "unofficial" release from the famous fig breeding program at Louisiana State University. This variety produces bountiful harvests of sweet, luscious figs that have a yellow exterior and golden interior. The honey flavor on these is very pronounced and each fig tastes like pure nectar at peak ripeness.
Much like all the other LSU fig varieties, LSU White Honey is a fast-growing tree that should start producing figs in the second year of growth. We have seen instances where it will form a few figs in the first year, but certainly in the second year. Whether enjoyed fresh off the tree or transformed into preserves and jams, these figs are an absolute delight!
When Do We Ship?
During the warm growing season, fig trees are usually shipped with 3-5 days of receiving an order -- sometimes sooner. During the winter months, shipments may be delayed while we wait for a window of warmer weather. We won't ship fig trees if they could potentially experience freezing temperatures during transit.
How Big Are the Trees?
Each fig tree is shipped in a 4x9" pot with an established root system. The height of the tree may vary depending on variety -- some varieties grow much faster than others. Our #1 goal is for you to be successful, so we won't ship a tree unless it's healthy.
All our fig trees are shipped individually. If you order multiple trees, you'll receive a separate box for each tree ordered. You'll also receive an email with separate tracking numbers for each tree.
What To Do When You Receive Your Tree?
As soon as your fig tree is delivered, carefully cut open the box, remove the packaging, and allow the tree to get some sunlight. DO NOT remove it from its pot until it has had some time to adjust and recover from any shipping stress.
We recommend watering daily and waiting at least two weeks before planting in a larger pot or in the ground. These fig trees can live comfortably in the 4x9" pot for several years, so there is no rush to move or replant it.
Winter climate is one of the biggest factors in how well a fig tree performs, and understanding your zone will save you a lot of guesswork. Fig trees are happiest in regions with mild winters, ideally where temperatures rarely drop below 20°F, since that's roughly the threshold where cold starts to seriously damage wood rather than just slow the tree down. That said, figs have a reputation for being far more cold-tolerant than most people assume, especially once a tree has had time to establish a strong root system. A newly planted tree and a mature, well-rooted tree can handle very different winters, so patience in those first year or two really pays off.
In zones 8, 9, and 10, established fig trees typically sail through winter without any special care. Even in the rare event of an unusually harsh cold snap, a tree may die back to the ground, but this is far less alarming than it sounds. The root system survives underground, and the tree will send up vigorous new growth the following spring, often growing back much of its lost size within a single season. Zones 5, 6, and 7 are a different story. Here, some degree of winter dieback should be expected as a normal part of growing figs, and if you want to preserve more of the tree's structure and get an earlier, larger harvest the following year, protecting it through the cold months with mulch, wraps, or other winter coverings makes a real difference. Growers in these zones often treat figs almost like a perennial that regrows from the base each year, rather than a tree that keeps the same shape and size indefinitely, and that mindset can take a lot of the stress out of a hard winter.
One area where good information is surprisingly hard to find is variety-specific cold-hardiness. Reliable, consistent data comparing how different fig varieties handle cold just doesn't exist in any rigorous way, and since we grow in a southern climate ourselves, we're not in a position to put varieties through true winter stress-testing. What we've observed over time, though, is that trunk size seems to matter more than variety when it comes to surviving winter. A fig tree with a trunk diameter of 3 inches or larger tends to come through winter in good shape almost regardless of what variety it is, likely because a larger trunk represents more stored energy and a more established root system to draw on. So if cold hardiness is a top priority for you, focusing on growing out trunk size, whether through container culture, protective wrapping, or simply time, may matter more than hunting for a specific "cold-hardy" variety.
Consistent moisture is one of the biggest drivers of fig tree growth and fruit production. If your soil drains well, fig trees respond strongly to frequent, deep watering — the more consistently they're watered during the growing season, the faster and larger they'll grow, and the more fruit they'll set. That said, well-drained soil is the key qualifier here: figs are fairly drought-tolerant once established, but they don't tolerate soggy, waterlogged roots. Oversaturated soil, especially in heavier clay or poorly draining ground, can quickly lead to root rot and stress the tree rather than help it. The goal is deep, even moisture — not standing water.
Adequate soil moisture also plays a direct role in fruiting. Many fig varieties produce two crops each year: an early breba crop in late spring or early summer, and a main crop later in the season. Whether a tree produces that second, main crop in late summer or fall often comes down to soil moisture during that window — trees that stay well-watered through summer are far more likely to push out a strong secondary harvest, while drought-stressed trees may skip it entirely. A layer of mulch around the base can help regulate moisture between waterings and reduce stress during hot, dry stretches, giving your tree the steady conditions it needs to keep producing right up until fall.
Timing matters just as much as the fertilizer itself when it comes to young fig trees. Right after planting, hold off on fertilizing altogether — a newly planted tree hasn't yet developed the root system needed to take up nutrients efficiently, and applying fertilizer too soon can actually burn tender new roots or push top growth the plant isn't ready to support. Give the tree time to establish first. Once you see signs of new root growth and the tree has settled into its spot, typically a few weeks to a couple of months after planting, it's ready to start receiving fertilizer to fuel healthy new growth.
From that point on, spring is the ideal window to fertilize, right as the tree is breaking dormancy and entering its active growing season. You can either pour a water-soluble fertilizer solution around the root zone or sprinkle a granular fertilizer at the base of the plant, working it lightly into the soil surface so it can reach the roots as you water. We generally recommend a fairly balanced fertilizer, with roughly equal parts nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (N-P-K), since this supports overall growth without overloading the tree with any one nutrient. That said, every soil is different, and a balanced fertilizer is really just a reasonable starting point rather than a guarantee. If you want to dial in your fertilization more precisely, a soil test is the best way to know exactly what your soil is lacking, or what it already has in excess, so you're not guessing at what your tree actually needs.
One of the nice things about growing figs is that they're remarkably low-maintenance compared to most other fruit trees. Where apples, peaches, and other orchard fruits often demand a regular spray schedule to fend off a long list of pests and diseases, figs largely sidestep that burden. That doesn't mean they're entirely trouble-free, but the issues you're likely to encounter are minor and manageable rather than tree-threatening.
The most common issue you'll see is fig rust, which shows up as small brown or reddish-brown specks scattered across the leaves. It tends to intensify as temperatures climb through the warmer months, and by late summer it's common to see noticeably spotted foliage, sometimes with early leaf drop. As alarming as it can look, rust is purely cosmetic. It doesn't affect fruit production or the long-term health of the tree, and it's something nearly every fig grower deals with to some degree. If you'd like to minimize it, you can spray your trees with Neem oil, horticultural oil, or liquid copper fungicide in late winter, before the tree breaks dormancy and starts pushing new leaves. Applying it during this dormant window helps reduce the fungal spores present before the growing season begins. Keep in mind this won't eliminate rust entirely — it's more about reducing severity than preventing it outright. At the end of the day, rust is simply part of growing figs, and it's not something to lose sleep over. Your tree will keep growing and producing fruit right alongside it.
Pruning is one of the few things about growing figs that's entirely optional. Left alone, a fig tree will grow and fruit just fine without ever being touched by shears, so if you're not interested in shaping or maintaining it, you don't have to. That said, figs respond very well to pruning and tolerate it more aggressively than most fruit trees, which gives you a lot of flexibility to manage size and shape based on your growing space rather than the tree's needs.
How much you prune really comes down to your setup. If you're growing in containers, cutting the tree back each year keeps it compact and manageable, which makes it far easier to move indoors when cold weather sets in. Some varieties naturally want to grow tall with a more open, tree-like form, and if that's not the look or size you want, you can prune them back to encourage a shorter, bushier growth habit instead, with more lateral branching closer to the ground. Neither approach is right or wrong. It's simply a matter of what fits your space and how you want to maintain the tree.
If you do decide to prune, timing matters. The best window is in the fall, once the tree has dropped its leaves and gone dormant, since pruning a dormant tree minimizes stress and avoids interrupting active growth. One thing worth knowing: some fig varieties produce an early breba crop on the previous year's wood, so heavy fall pruning can reduce or eliminate that first flush of fruit the following year. It won't harm the tree in any way, but if you specifically want a breba crop, prune more lightly or focus your cuts on wood that didn't produce the year before. Either way, don't be afraid to prune as much as your space requires. Figs are forgiving trees, and a hard pruning in fall simply means a flush of vigorous new growth come spring.
